USC vs. ucla

Pete Carroll is great, I want to have his babies. This is just really cool... and incidentally I assume with his clout and efforts that this will become tradition, at least on the USC side traveling to the Rose Bowl. You know what would be funny... if ucla refuses to wear their homes in the Coliseum next year simply because the traditional idea was that of a Trojan.

USC willing to give up timeouts to wear red at UCLA

Updated: December 2, 2008, 11:52 AM ET

USC coach Pete Carroll says the NCAA can have two of his timeouts from Saturday's crosstown rivalry game with UCLA. He just wants his players to wear their home colors.

ESPN.com's Ted Miller writes about all things Pac-10 in his conference blog.

Carroll said on Monday that the Trojans would wear their cardinal red home jerseys on Saturday at the Rose Bowl. That violates an NCAA rule that requires visiting teams to wear white, and the infraction will cost him two timeouts, one per half.

The last time the Trojans and the Bruins both wore home jerseys -- the Trojans in red, the Bruins in blue and gold -- was in 1982, when the schools shared the Los Angeles Coliseum. "I just thought it was a really cool tradition," Carroll said. As for losing timeouts? "I don't care about it right now," Carroll said. "I think it's the fun thing to do, and I think the fans will appreciate it over time." Carroll said the decision to wear home jerseys is not meant as a sign of disrespect to UCLA, adding that he discussed restoring the tradition with former UCLA coach Karl Dorrell and with current coach Rick Neuheisel. "It's exciting," Neuheisel said. "I think wearing the home jerseys is a great tradition." In the meantime, the Pacific 10 Conference has forwarded a request to NCAA football rules committee secretary Rogers Redding, seeking to change the rule. Pac 10 commissioner Tom Hansen said he expected to a decision by Tuesday.

SEC vs Pac 10

After UCLA pulls the big upset over Tennessee it's becoming more and more debatable. UCLA is in the bottom half of the Pac 10 yet beat the #18 ranked Vols. Interesting start to the season.

Mascots that make you say WTF?

Eagle blogs:

There are a lot of weird, stupid or pussy mascots that we almost never hear about at small schools i.e. Whittier Poets, Boll Weevils, UC Santa Cruz “Banana Slugs”, Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops, Anteaters, Fighting Okra etc..

But the major school mascots that are weird for me:

1. Big Al the Elephant – Alabama Crimson Tide (why an elephant to represent a Tide – why a tide – crimson or otherwise),

2. Lil Red – Nebraska – why no cornhusker? What is a cornhusker? Why steal Bob’s Big Boy mascot?

3. Oregon Ducks – sorry – Owls might not be Eagles but I’ll take them over a fucking duck.

4. Stanford Tree – what’s up with that – a bunch of pretentious fucks.

My favorites:

1. Oregon State Beavers – it’s the mascot equivalent of “Dick Hurtz” or “Mike Hunt”. There should be more along that line -- that sound dirty but could have another meaning – The Snatch, Trim, Peckerheads,

Muffs, Rack, Big Pussy’s.

2. Southern Illinois Salukis – not a clue – but sounds great.

3. USC – Trojans -- a mascot named Tommy – a big good looking stud horse named Traveller and condoms – works for me.

But none of this will matter – at some point – like they have everything else – corporations will buy their way into College sports – and we’ll have the Kentucky Fried Chickens, Wyoming Ford Mustangs, University of Washington Mutual’s, Penn State Lottery’s and the U of Seattle Starbucks (actually that doesn’t sound so bad).
